MKs split over proposal to recognize fallen firefighters

MKs from Israel Beiteinu were due to support a proposed resolution submitted Sunday by Interior Minister Eli Yishai in which the government will recognize firefighters who perished in the Carmel fire disaster as part of the "service men and woman" who will be mourned on Remembrance Day.

The proposal comes amid plans to change legislation on how to refer to fallen firefighters.

Yishai on Thursday commented on a previous decision not to recognize the killed firefighters as "service men," saying "The three firefighters [who were killed in the Carmel fires] gave their lives for the people of Israel and this all of this bureaucratic insensitivity is preventing their recognition as Israel's fallen men."
