Netanyahu says eliminating value added tax on food will help poor immediately

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday defended his newly announced plan to eliminate value added tax on basic food staples.
He said at a Likud faction meeting that he had not unveiled the plan before, because former finance minister Yair Lapid's bill to eliminate VAT on homes for some young couples did not allow it.
Netanyahu said that he saw the plan to eliminate VAT on foodstuffs as a way to give relief immediately to the poor sections of society that need help.
