New Supreme Court president sworn in to office

Esther Hayut, Israel's new Supreme Court president, was sworn into office on Thursday, in a Jerusalem ceremony attended by the prime minister, president and heads of the justice and political establishment.

Hayut, 64, is replacing Miriam Naor as the head of the judicial branch, a position she will hold until her retirement in six years.

A farewell ceremony for Naor was held earlier Thursday in Jerusalem.

Hayut takes up her role at a time when tension between the Knesset and the Supreme Court is mounting, with many politicians on the right of the dial accusing the court of being too activist in knocking down laws passed in parliament.

The court however got a vote of confidence from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who in his welcoming speech said that while tensions are inherent to the relationship, "a strong and independent court is necessary. That hasn't changed and that won't change.
