'On the Origin of Species' marks 153rd anniversary

Saturday marked the 153rd anniversary of the publication of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species, which introduced the scientific theory of evolution by way of natural selection.
Darwin's monumental, albeit highly controversial publication, advanced the notion that life originated from a common point, and, thereby, diversity arose by descent through a branching pattern of evolution.
The theory also introduced mainstay concepts such as "variation," "adaptation," and "survival of the fittest," in the process fundamentally transforming the way human beings view themselves in relation to their environment.
