A Palestinian court in Ramallah on Monday sentenced a former director-general of the Palestinian Authority Finance Ministry, Sami Al-Ramlawi, to 15 years in prison with hard labor after finding him guilty of embezzlement of pubic funds.
Al-Ramlawi, who fled to Jordan several years ago, was sentenced in absentia. The PA said it would seek his extradition. Al-Ramlawi served as director-general of the Finance Ministry shortly after the formation of the PA in 1994.
The court also imposed heavy fines on the former official.
In once case, Al-Ramlawi received a fine of 100,000 Jordanian Dinars (approximately $128,000). In another case, the court imposed on him a fine of 4.85 million Shekels.
The court also decided to confiscate a building and a plot of land owned by Al-Ramalawi.
Three other former PA employees were sentenced to prison terms ranging from one to three years for their role in the embezzlement.
