Parents to organize shutdown of elementary schools around country due to overcrowding

The Forum of Regional Parents’ Unions is moving ahead with plans for a nationwide shutdown of elementary schools on Sunday, in protest against overcrowding in classrooms.

The forum has been disrupting school schedules across the country over the past few weeks, pulling its children out of classrooms for morning sessions and demonstrating outside the schools.

After a failed meeting with Michal Cohen, director-general of the Education Ministry, on June 11, all talks between the forum and the Education Ministry ceased.

The ministry has repeatedly stated that it works in partnership with the National Parents’ Association, a body the forum claims is not truly representative of parents and is funding by the ministry itself.

Schools will be open on Sunday and operate normally, according to a directive sent out by the Education Ministry. The ministry’s statement called on parents not to give in to pressure and to send their children to school as usual.

In the meantime, parents from around the country have been sending packages containing tins of sardines to the office of the Education Minister Naftali Bennett, symbolic of what has been dubbed the “sardine protests” against children being packed in schools like them.
