Peres: As long as I'm breathing I won't forgive Yigal Amir

President Shimon Peres visited Ayalon Prison in Ramle on Tuesday, stating that he would never forgive former prime minister Yitzhak Rabin's assassin, Yigal Amir.

"As long as I am breathing, I will not forgive Yigal Amir" Peres stated. When asked if Amir's life sentence would ever be shortened, Peres answered, "God forbid."

"We have disagreements among ourselves in the nation, but it is forbidden to solve them with gunshots. There is no forgiveness for what he did."

Peres also addressed the case of his predecessor as president Moshe Katsav, who is serving a seven year prison sentence for rape at Ma'asiyahu Prison, next door to Ayalon Prison. The president said that he could not yet say whether or not he would eventually grant Katsav a pardon, but stated that he was "aware of the severity of sex crimes."
