Peres calls for immediate action on child poverty

President Shimon Peres on Tuesday issued a call for all political parties campaigning for the Knesset to temporarily lay aside their differences and come together to formulate a national policy for the welfare of the child in Israel.
Peres made the request after receiving the annual copy of the State of the Child in Israel report, which he found disturbing because the number of children living below the poverty line is more than 4.5 time higher than it was 30 years ago.
Peres said that children are the nation's most important investment and must be given top priority.
A child can be a blessing or a burden, he said, depending on what is invested in that child, and Israel must invest more.
