Peres: If Syria crumbles, Israel will suffer as consequence

If Syria doesn't end the civil war raging within it, and recover from the losses the conflict caused, Israel could suffer as a consequence, President Shimon Peres said Monday while touring the Gaza border.
"The problem is not the border with Syria, but Syria itself. If Syria doesn't recover [from the civil war] and crumbles, it will be a disaster for the Syrian people but not just to them," the president said.
"I don't see a specific intention [of the Syrian people] to cross the border and attack us, but the fact that what united Syria was lost is a problem for us, for them and for the entire region," Peres continued.
