Philippine ferry capsizes, killing 12

A Philippine ferry capsized Saturday on its way to a resort town south of Manila, killing at least 12 people, including a Japanese tourist, officials said. The ferry Commando 6, a large motorized outrigger, capsized when one of its outriggers broke midway on its journey from Batangas city to Puerto Galera on Mindoro Island, about 135 kilometers south of Manila, regional police Chief Superintendent Luisito Palmera said. Coast guard district commander Commodore Cecil Chen told DZBB radio there were 48 survivors including five crew members. Coast guard Chief of Staff Capt. Enrico Evangelista told The Associated Press the boat was meant to carry only 42 passengers. He said the coast guard will investigate. The ferry was used by local and foreign tourists heading for Puerto Galera's beach resorts.
