Rebbe of Sadigura hassidim dies, 84

The rebbe of the hassidic dynasty of Sadigura, Rabbi Avrohom Yaakov Friedman, passed away on Tuesday morning at the age of 84.
The rabbi, who had been suffering from pneumonia for several days, lost consciousness in his home and was rushed to Mayanei Ha’Yeshua hospital in Bnei Brak but did not recover.
Friedman was born in Vienna, but moved to Mandate Palestine with his family shortly before the outbreak of World War II. The family subsequently moved to the US but returned to Israel several years afterwards.
Friedman was a member of the Council of Torah Sages of the Agudath Yisrael political movement, a body that shapes the policies and stance of hassidic Jewry in Israel.
Thousands of people, including several leading hassidic and non-hassidic rabbis, attended the rebbe’s funeral procession Tuesday afternoon, which started from the Sadigura center and synagogue in Bnei Brak and concluded at the Nachlat Yitzchak cemetery in Givatayim.
Friedman’s son, Rabbi Yisroel Moshe Friedman has been appointed as the new rebbe of the Sadigura dynasty, in accordance with his late father’s instructions.
