Report: Iran hangs 11 convicted criminals

TEHRAN - Iran hanged 11 people on Thursday, five of them publicly, after they were convicted of crimes ranging from murder to drug smuggling, the official IRNA news agency reported.

One of those hanged publicly was a serial killer convicted of murdering five middle-aged women in the city of Qazvin, west of the capital Tehran.

Four more were hanged publicly in the southern city of Shiraz, convicted of armed robberies and kidnappings.

Murder, adultery, rape, armed robbery, drug trafficking and apostasy -- the renouncing of religion, in this case Islam -- are all punishable by death under Iranian Sharia law practiced since the 1979 Islamic revolution.

IRNA said another six were hanged after they were convicted of smuggling drugs. Four of them were executed in a prison in the southwest and two others were put to death in the northern city of Sari.
