Report: Peri to call for enlistment law by 2016

Army Radio reported on Wednesday that chairman of the ministerial committee on haredi enlistment Yaakov Peri is expected to demand that the final date for implementation of mandatory national service be brought forward by a year to 2016, instead of 2017 as stipulated in the coalition agreement between Yesh Atid and Likud Beytenu.
The terms of the agreement stipulates that full time yeshiva students will be able to defer national service for three years from age 18 to 21, after which they will be obligated to serve either in the IDF or the civilian service, and subject to personal financial sanctions if they refuse.
The 2017 date for implementation has been criticized out of concern that a new government could be in place before the law is enacted, putting at risk any reforms agreed upon in the current Knesset.
