Rock attacks limits Light Rail service

Following weeks of incessant rock throwing at trains by Palestinians in east Jerusalem, CityPass, which operates the Light Rail, announced Sunday that seven of the company’s 23 trains are no longer operable.

“Due to continued and repeated rock throwing that inflicts damage to the trains, this morning we only have 16 operable trains,” the company said in a statement. “What this means is that fewer trains than needed are active on the line, and the frequency will be harmed.”

Two Light Rail stops were destroyed in Shuafat and Beit Hanina during rioting following the July murder of Palestinian teen Mohammad Abu Khdeir, costing the municipality millions of shekels to repair. The Jerusalem Municipality has since deployed miniature helicopter drones in the areas equipped with high definition cameras to deter vandalism and help expedite arrests.
