Switzerland has reached the World Cup finals, getting the point it needed to win Group 2 with a 0-0 draw against Israel.
The Swiss finished on 21 points, one clear of Greece which beat Luxembourg in a match played at the same time Wednesday.
On a tense night at St. Jakob-Park, the Swiss did just enough against an Israel team reduced to 10 men in the 59th minute when Avihay Yadin received his second yellow card.
Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld lost three first-choice players from his starting lineup - goalkeeper Diego Benaglio, midfielder Benjamin Huggel and striker Alexander Frei - because of a stomach bug.
The Swiss went on an eight-match unbeaten run after a 2-1 upset loss to Luxembourg to qualify for South Africa.
