Three police officers injured in Issawiya

Three police officers were lightly injured in the Jerusalem village of Issawiya Monday night in what police say may have been a violent protest over Palestinian prisoner Samer Essawi’s hunger strike. Essawi subsequently agreed Tuesday to end his hunger strike in return for his release in eight months.
According to Police Spokesman Micky Rosenfeld, the three officers were struck by rocks hurled at them by roughly 40 Palestinians during the confrontation, resulting in five arrests and the brief hospitalization of the officers. “We’re not 100 percent sure it’s connected to the hunger strike, but it’s one of the issues we’re looking into,” Rosenfeld said.
