International Holocaust Day will be marked at Yad Vashem with a symposium. Speakers will discuss guilt, sin and punishment.

Thursday, January 26 International Holocaust Day will be marked at Yad Vashem with a symposium beginning at 9:45 a.m. Speakers will discuss guilt, sin and punishment. It will be held in the lecture hall of Yad Vashem's School for Holocaust Education. A conference on "Providing Civil Legal Assistance in Israel" will be held from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. in room 405, Maiersdorf Faculty Club, the Hebrew University, Mount Scopus campus. The conference is being held in connection with the publication of Zarkur, a position paper by Dr. Mimi Ajzenstadt and Barak Ariel of the study group on social policy at the Paul Baerwald School of Social Work of the Hebrew University. "The government has a responsibility to provide assistance for citizens who cannot afford to hire professional legal services," contends Ajzenstadt, who notes that, at present, only minimal funds are allocated for such service, which contradicts the principle of equal justice for all. Statistics to be presented at the conference will illustrate the growing demand for legal assistance, particularly by women who constitute the weakest economic sector among those seeking adjudication in civil matters. Conference participants will include senior figures from the School of Social Work as well as legal experts from the university and from the Ministry of Justice. The Jerusalem Post in conjunction with AACI and the Great Synagogue will have a panel discussion with some of the candidates who will present their platforms and answer questions. Sunday, January 29 The Fullbright/Israel/USIEF 50th anniversary two-day symposium on International Influences on National Legal Systems will be held at the Hebrew University on Sunday and the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya on Monday beginning at 9:45 a.m. The Hebrew University sessions will be held in Room 503 Maiersdorf Faculty Club, Mount Scopus campus and will deal with: Comparative Perspectives on Public Law; Administrative Law; International Law in Domestic Courts; and International Influences on National Legal Systems. The IDC sessions in auditorium 316, Ayalon School of Business will deal with Equality and Rights, Freedom of Expression and Judicial Review. Speakers will include Alan Dershowitz, Ruth Gavison, Supreme Court President Aharon Barak, Amnon Rubinstein and other legal experts. A symposium on the philosophy of non-mainstream thinker Prof. Yeshayahu Leibowitz will be held under the joint auspices of the Open University and Bar Ilan University. Prof. Porat will talk about the evolution of January 27 as Auschwitz Day and Holocaust Days in general. Other speakers include MK Rabbi Michael Melchior.
