The global cruise market has experienced renewed growth in recent years, following a rapid recovery from the industry’s downturn during the COVID-19 pandemic. Industry estimates indicate that demand for cruises has already surpassed pre-2020 peak levels, with the luxury segment considered a particularly strong growth driver. More travelers are seeking an intimate, less crowded experience, emphasizing personal space, high-level gastronomy, and unique destinations. Within this trend, cruise companies are competing not only on itineraries but also on hospitality standards themselves, with smaller ships, high service ratios, and significant investments in design, wellness, and sustainability.

Against this backdrop, the luxury cruise brand Explora Journeys, part of MSC Cruises, is unveiling the third ship in its fleet – EXPLORA III – which is expected to enter service ahead of schedule, in July 2026.

The ship will embark on a special inaugural cruise in the Mediterranean from July 24 to 29, prior to the official launch ceremony in Barcelona on August 1, 2026. The company presents EXPLORA III as a tourist destination in its own right – a sort of floating luxury hotel – emphasizing contemporary design, meticulous hospitality, and an “Ocean Wellness” concept that connects sea, body, and mind.

A Larger, More Intimate Ship

The new ship is 19.2 meters longer than its predecessors and features only 463 suites – a figure positioning it as one of the more intimate ships in the segment. The crew-to-guest ratio approaches 1:1, allowing for highly personalized service and an exceptional sense of space. The suite mix has been updated to include a higher proportion of Ocean Penthouses and Ocean Residences, alongside two Owner’s Residences – one of which was designed by international designer Patricia Urquiola.

Dedicated Chef’s Table and Wine Cellar

Culinary offerings are also set to receive a major boost: Three new concepts will be added to the ship, including a dedicated Chef’s Table and a luxury wine cellar, alongside the brand’s signature restaurants and 12 bars and lounges designed as elegant gathering spaces.

Unified Wellness Area

In the wellness domain, EXPLORA III will feature a new unified area that consolidates spa, fitness, and wellbeing facilities under a single concept, including holistic treatments, advanced fitness equipment, and relaxation spaces with sea views.

Enhanced Shopping Experience

The shopping experience will also be enhanced, with stores from Rolex and Cartier, and for the first time, the jewelry brand Chopard, alongside additional luxury brands and exclusive collections.

Sustainability and Itineraries

The ship will be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and equipped with next-generation engines that allow the use of low-carbon fuels, as part of the growing sustainability trend in the cruise industry. After its inaugural season in the Mediterranean, the ship will continue to Northern Europe, Iceland, and Greenland.
