The Spanish island of Mallorca, located in the western Mediterranean and whose capital is Palma de Mallorca, is a popular vacation destination that attracts many tourists. And on this island, a unique "selfie trail" with dedicated photo stations was inaugurated this month. As such, it aims to balance the major dilemma of tourism today: On the one hand capturing the best moments of a trip or vacation and on the other hand – promoting sustainable tourism.

The new route passes through the jurisdiction of the local authority of Calvià (Calvià), which is famous for its classical architecture, with buildings from the 17th century. This is alongside an impressive mountainous landscape and convenient access to the beaches. And more precisely – the route was inaugurated in the resort town of Magaluf (Magaluf). The new route, launched under the slogan "Magaluf for All" (Magaluf for All), includes photo booths strategically located at points of interest, with the aim that both visitors and residents will come to the place, take photos and upload images of themselves and the town's scenery to Instagram. In short, not exactly a screen-free vacation.

Photo booths and smart signage

"The route consists of smart signage that allows visitors to take perfect landscape photos and selfies independently", it was stated in a press release by the Calvià Council. The Euro News website reports that so far, four dedicated selfie stations have already been installed along the trail. The locations include, among others, a historic estate, which the city council recommends photographing at sunrise. Three additional selfie stations are expected to be deployed later along the trail.

For technology enthusiasts, the route offers more than just another photo opportunity. With a few clicks in a dedicated app, you can plan exactly where to go along the new trail to capture the best photos. The app also includes an audio guide available in several languages, to allow users to learn in depth about the points of interest along the trail.

The Calvià Council stated that the initiative is part of a broader campaign aimed at promoting awareness of sustainable tourism. It emphasized that the initiative is supported by the Government of the Balearic Islands and funded through Mallorca’s sustainable tourism tax. The initiative is intended to encourage "responsible behavior among tourists and residents, to foster coexistence and environmental preservation", the council stated. It added that the campaign will promote Magaluf with the support of visitors who turn themselves into the "best ambassadors of the destination", by sharing their memories online.
