If you have always thought that upgrading a hotel room is a privilege reserved only for luxury customers or those willing to pay more – you were wrong. According to tourism experts, the way to a better room can be much simpler than you think.
The secret, it turns out, is not money and not special status but one small question at the reception desk.
Jamie, the owner of a luxury resort estate in Scotland, explains to LADbible magazine that one of the most effective tricks is to ask for a corner room. According to him, this is a completely legitimate request that is no different from other guest requests, and it can often lead to a significant upgrade.
Corner rooms are considered more desirable, and not by chance. Thanks to the hotel structure, they are usually slightly larger than standard rooms, and sometimes include additional windows or a more open and pleasant space. In addition, they usually share only one wall with an adjacent room, which makes them quieter – a significant advantage especially after a long flight or a busy day.
So how do you increase the chances of getting such a room?
According to experts, it all starts with approach. A polite request to the reception staff can make a big difference. Hotel staff are used to guest requests, and if there is an option to accommodate them they will often do so.
Timing also matters. Arriving early at the hotel, before all the rooms have been allocated, increases the chances of choosing from better options. In contrast, arriving during peak hours or in busy seasons, like summer vacations, reduces the chances of an upgrade.
In addition, it is worth mentioning preferences such as a desire for a quiet room or a room on a high floor. Sometimes the request itself directs the staff to offer better alternatives, even if it is not an “official” upgrade.
Another trick that may work is to mention a special occasion. A birthday, honeymoon or wedding anniversary can encourage the hotel staff to surprise you with an upgrade or another benefit, as part of the desire to create a positive experience for guests.
And what happens if you did not get an upgrade?
Here too there is good news. In many cases, the hotel staff will try to compensate in other ways, such as a voucher for a drink at the bar, worthwhile recommendations about the area or additional services that can improve the stay.
The main message is quite simple, there is no need to be afraid or feel uncomfortable. In the worst case you will receive a negative answer, but in the best case you can enjoy a better room without paying extra.
