The US awarded IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz the Legion of Merit on Tuesday.
Gantz is on a five-day visit to Washington as the guest of Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The Legion of Merit was awarded to Gantz in the name of President Barack Obama, for “outstanding” command of the IDF which allows it to continue to cope with a wide range of challenges.
Gantz thanked his American hosts and said he was accepting the award on behalf of all IDF soldiers and commanders.
During the visit, Gantz and Dempsey are expected to discuss security challenges and assess the latest Middle East regional security picture.
The air strikes in Syria, attributed by foreign media sources to the Israel Air Force, and their effect on the security situation, will likely dominate the discussions.
