A professor and artist transform former synagogue into community space
Over the course of nearly a century, this 10,000-square-foot building in the Woodlawn neighborhood has served many religious communities, first as a synagogue and then as a series of churches.
THE INTERIOR of the Old City’s Yohanan ben Zakai Synagogue, built in the early 1600s. This was the first of the Four Sephardi Synagogues, which were severely damaged by the Jordanians after the 1948 War of Independence but rebuilt after the Six Day War.
