The Likud will hold its long-awaited party convention next Wednesday after Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu agreed to give key powers to the head of the Likud central committee, Deputy Defense Minister Danny Danon, the party announced on Thursday.The convention had been set for March 31, but it was delayed due to internal legal technicalities in the party. Had the convention taken place then, it could have caused problems for Netanyahu, because the fourth round of the Palestinian prisoner releases had been set to take place the following day and the prime minister would have had to address the hawks at the convention.Netanyahu and Danon reached a series of understandings about how the party will be run. Danon said he would now be permitted to convene meetings of the central committee and set their agenda. Such power would enable him to hold meetings when there are diplomatic developments.The committee will decide by the end of the year how to elect the party’s MKs. Central committee members want the power to select the MKs returned to them after the entire party membership has elected them in recent years.A source close to Netanyahu said such issues were still being discussed in their party’s internal court.
