The voluntary organization Life’s Door-Tishkofet has just trained its 100th volunteer to give emotional support to patients with very serious or terminal diseases and their families.
The organization’s 100th volunteer was Chana, who herself cared for a terminally ill spouse and, after being helped to get stronger emotionally and spiritually by Life’s Door support groups and counseling, joined the organization to help others like herself. She underwent a 36-hour training program to prepare for the job.
The national organization’s Vayelech Moshe – Shared Journey Spiritual Care Volunteer Training Program prepares graduates to accompany and support terminally ill patients at the very end of their lives. Volunteers work in hospitals, nursing homes and private residences and have professional supervision.
The organization was established by Prof. Ben Corn, a leading oncologist at Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center whose father died from cancer at age of 52, and is run with his wife Dvora (Phyllis) Corn, a therapist who personally counsels families. Corn is a monthly columnist and weekly blogger for The Jerusalem Post.
On Sunday, the organization will be holding its annual gala dinner, where it will confer its Health Awareness for the Public and Community Award on Jerusalem Post health and science editor Judy Siegel- Itzkovich.
