Sri Lankan troops and Tamil rebels clashed in the country's northwest on Wednesday, leaving 23 fighters dead, military said.
The clash erupted as government soldiers tried to destroy rebel mortar positions east of Madhu village of northwestern Mannar district, the Defense Ministry information center said.
The center said about 20 Tamil rebels and three soldiers were killed in the battle.
