Poland shot down drones that entered its airspace on Wednesday, the first time a member of NATO is known to have fired shots during Russia's war in Ukraine.

So far, Polish authorities have found seven drones and parts of one missile following intrusion of drones into Polish airspace overnight, interior ministry spokesperson Karolina Galecka told a news briefing.

Here are some reactions to the situation from leading politicians.

POLISH PRIME MINISTER DONALD TUSK

"We are dealing with a large-scale provocation... We are ready to repel such provocations. The situation is serious, and no-one doubts that we must prepare for various scenarios."

"The fact that these drones, which posed a security threat, were shot down changes the political situation."

"I reiterate to the Polish people and their government our full solidarity. I will soon speak with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. We will not compromise on the security of the Allies."

HUNGARIAN PRIME MINISTER VIKTOR ORBAN

Hungary stands in solidarity with Poland, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on X social media platform after drones entered Polish airspace, and he called the violation of territorial integrity unacceptable.

"The incident proves that our policy of calling for peace in the Russia-Ukraine war is reasonable and rational," Orban said. "Living in the shadow of a war is fraught with risks and dangers. It’s time to make it stop!"
