The United States Secret Service said its agents shot and killed a man in his 20s after he tried to unlawfully enter a secure perimeter at US President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday, while Trump was not present.
According to the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office (PBSO), at approximately 1:30 a.m. ET, Mar-a-Lago's security detail detected an intruder within the resort's internal perimeter.
Two Secret Service agents and a PBSO deputy went to investigate the intrusion and identified a white man carrying a shotgun and a canister of gasoline.
Law enforcement approached the man and asked him to drop the items, according to the PBSO. The man then dropped the gas canister and raised the shotgun to a firing position, prompting the agents to fire.
The man was pronounced deceased at the scene of the incident.
The man was later identified as 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin, a North Carolina man who was reported missing by family members earlier in the week, according to the Associated Press.
No Secret Service or PBSO personnel were injured during the incident, the Secret Service stated.
FBI, PBSO, USSS investigating incident
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), PBSO, and Secret Service are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the man's background, possible motives, and actions, as well as the law enforcement use of deadly force, according to the Secret Service statement.
FBI Director Kash Patel announced that the FBI is "dedicating all necessary resources in the investigation of this morning’s incident" in a post on X/Twitter, affirming that his organization will be cooperating with federal, state, and local law enforcement over the course of the investigation.
