The fatal accident occurred when two firefighting helicopters collided. One aircraft immediately released the water it was carrying, and its pilots managed to land safely.

According to the initial report all four crewmembers were rescued from the crash site alive, however two of them later died from their injuries.

The helicopters were part of an operation to control a wildfire that had destroyed more than 100 homes northwest of Athens.
