'Assassination of St. Petersburg mayor prevented'

The Federal Security Service (FSB) said Saturday it has arrested two people on suspicion of plotting to assassinate the mayor of St. Petersburg, Russia's second-largest city. Valery Kuznetsov, a spokesman for the security service's St. Petersburg office, said the two were arrested on Wednesday in connection with an alleged plot against Valentina Matvienko. Kuznetsov declined to give further details. Russian news agencies reported that grenades and plastic explosive were confiscated during the arrest.
