Australia supports US isolation of Syria, Iran

Australia's foreign minister said Friday the government will support any moves by US President George W. Bush to isolate Iran and Syria as part of a new strategy to win the war in Iraq. Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said the alleged involvement of Iran and Syria in the Iraq conflict needs to be addressed, underscoring his government's support for Bush's revised war plan. "Iranians have been providing support for at least some of the Shi'ite militia in Iraq, and the Syrians have certainly been creating a far too benign environment for terrorists," he told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio from Los Angeles, where he was helping to promote Australia's tourism industry.
