Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said it was important that Beijing uses its growing influence in international affairs responsibly, adding that both Washington and Canberra wanted to engage the country constructively.
"The Americans share our view that, with the rise of China, we don't want to pursue a policy of containment," Downer told Australian Broadcasting Corp. television. "We want to pursue a policy of successful engagement."
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is scheduled to arrive in Sydney on Thursday for two days of bilateral talks. Her visit will also include a trilateral security discussion including Japan that is likely to examine China's military buildup.
Downer said that as China's economic weight grows, so will its political influence in the region. "That has to be recognized, accommodated, and China has to use that growing weight with a high degree of responsibility," he said.
