Canadian gov't seeks to extend Afghan mission

Canada's new Conservative government will ask Parliament to approve a two-year extension of its military mission in Afghanistan. The Canadian mission in Kandahar, Afghanistan, is scheduled to end in February 2007, but the government will ask lawmakers to vote on Wednesday to extend the mission to February 2009. It appears unlikely the opposition parties will vote against it, although they have not said how they will vote. The Liberals made the original decision to send troops in to Afghanistan after declining to send troops to Iraq.
