China officially appoints new Hong Kong leader

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao officially appointed Donald Tsang as Hong Kong's leader on Monday, state media said. The ceremony took place in the Zhongnanhai compound in Beijing where Chinese leaders live, the Xinhua News Agency said. Tsang, whose five-year term begins July 1, will meet President Hu Jintao and other leaders during his three-day visit to Beijing, it said. Tsang, a career civil servant, pledged during the campaign to chart out a plan and timetable for full democracy for China's richest city by the end of his term in 2012.
