E. Timor's ruling party may replace prime minister

East Timor's ruling party was set to meet Sunday to discuss replacing the prime minister, a move that could calm months of violence and political turmoil.
Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri said nothing as he arrived at the headquarters of his Fretilin ruling party, but told Portuguese news agency Lusa on Saturday that he was prepared to resign.
In recent days, thousands of protesters have backed calls by President Xanana Gusmao for Alkatiri to step down over allegations that he armed a hit squad to eliminate his opponents and his decision to fire 600 soldiers in March, which led to bloody street battles in the capital.
