EU: Israel should resume transfer of funds to PA

The European Union on Wednesday again called on Israel to resume the transfer of millions of dollars in tax revenues to the Palestinians, saying the freeze on the money will cause ordinary families to suffer. The EU's foreign affairs commissioner told members of the European Parliament that the international community must press Israel to resume the monthly transfer of US $50 million in taxes it collects on behalf of the Palestinians. Israel halted the payments after Hamas came to political power in January's Palestinian legislative elections. "These are Palestinian taxes which people have already paid. Withholding them means that basic services won't be delivered, salaries cannot be paid and families will suffer," said EU External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner.
