Hundreds evacuated from California airport

A suspicious piece of luggage prompted the evacuation of a Los Angeles-area airport terminal Thursday, authorities said. The luggage was discovered in a checked bag by US Transportation Security Administration workers at about 9:30 a.m. at Long Beach Airport, city police spokeswoman Kathy Parsons said. Several hundred people were ordered to evacuate, and firefighters, police and a bomb squad were called to the airport, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of downtown Los Angeles. Airport spokeswoman Maricela de Rivera said inbound flights were landing but being held on the tarmac, while outbound flights had been delayed or canceled.
