An Italian military judge has suspended a work-release permit for a former Nazi SS captain convicted for his role in a 1944 massacre, court officials said Tuesday. The decision followed protests by the families of those murdered, politicians and Jewish groups.
Erich Priebke was granted permission last month to leave the Rome apartment where he is serving a life sentence to work as a translator at his lawyer's office in the Italian capital.
The 93-year-old Priebke was photographed Monday on the back of a motorbike being driven to the lawyer's office. Dozens of Rome Jews, some of them survivors of Nazi camps, shouted "Murderer!" from the street outside the office.
