Japanese authorities sent four North Korean defectors to South Korea on Saturday, Japan's Kyodo News agency reported.
The group - a couple and their two adult sons - had arrived in northern Japan two weeks ago after a six-day voyage in an open boat.
They told investigators they had fled to escape extreme poverty, and asked for asylum in South Korea.
The defectors departed from Tokyo's Narita International Airport for Seoul, Kyodo said.
