Lebanon's premier has told Germany that it will ask Berlin to contribute to the UN peacekeeping force there, a government spokeswoman said Tuesday. Germany's offer to lead a naval task force to help prevent arms smuggling to Hezbollah is on hold because the Lebanese government has not lodged a formal request with the United Nations. Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Saniora called German Chancellor Angela Merkel late Monday to tell her that Lebanese officials were drafting the request, the spokeswoman said on customary condition of anonymity. It was unclear what exactly Lebanon would request or when the letter might reach the UN. German officials have suggested that they may send more than 1,000 service personnel to the UN force, most of them sailors on warships.
