Nobel winners support new UN human rights council

Five Nobel Peace Prize laureates, including former US president Jimmy Carter and ex-South Korean president Kim Dae-jung, declared their support in an opinion piece published Sunday for a proposal to reform the United Nations Commission on Human Rights. The five laureates said there were "many positive elements" in a draft resolution presented last month by the president of the General Assembly, Jan Eliasson of Sweden, after months of negotiations, to replace the existing commission with a new UN Human Rights Council. "Some have asserted that the proposal is just a weak compromise," the five laureates wrote in an op-ed piece published in Sunday's New York Times. "We challenge this claim."
