Pakistan: Tribal dispute kills nine

A tribal dispute in Pakistan's unruly northwest escalated into a gunbattle that left nine people dead and 16 wounded Thursday, an official said. The shooting broke out as elders tried to mediate an argument in Zargari village, 60 kilometers southwest of Peshawar, district chief Ghani Ur Rehman said. Ghani said he was still trying to find out who was involved and what triggered the dispute during a jirga, or tribal council, Thursday morning. "Hot words were exchanged, then there was firing" at the meeting, Rehman said.
