Pope worries over Turkish-Iraqi border tensions

Pope Benedict XVI expressed concern Sunday about developments along the Turkish-Iraqi border and appealed for a peaceful resolution a day before a Turkish-US meeting in Washington to avert a cross-border offensive against Kurdish rebels. "An appeal: The news of these last days regarding events in the border region between Turkey and Iraq is a source of worry for me and for everyone," Benedict XVI told pilgrims in St. Peter's Square. "I desire, thus, to encourage every effort to reach a peaceful solution to the problems that have recently emerged between Turkey and Iraqi Kurdistan."
