Red Cross welcomes treaty to ban cluster bombs

The International Committee of the Red Cross has praised an agreement by 111 nations to ban cluster bombs as a major step forward for the protection of civilians. Red Cross president Jakob Kellenberger says the treaty agreed Wednesday in Dublin, Ireland, will prevent much civilian suffering by making the weapon illegal under international law. Kellenberger's remarks were issued in a statement Thursday from the Red Cross headquarters in Geneva. The group is urging all states to sign the treaty.
