Ex-Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and a line of uniformed brass who worked for him deny any cover-up and reject any blame in the friendly-fire death in Afghanistan of an American football hero turned soldier.
During four hours of questioning Wednesday by members of a House of Representatives committee, Rumsfeld and former generals expressed regret at the Pentagon's five-week delay in telling the truth about how Army Ranger Pat Tillman died.
He was cut down by bullets fired by his fellow soldiers, not in a firefight with the enemy as the military initially claimed when it awarded him a Silver Star medal for his valor.
