Security Council calls for durable Gaza cease-fire

The UN Security Council is calling for the temporary cease-fire in Gaza to be turned into durable truce with guarantees to prevent arms smuggling and to ensure that all border crossings are permanently reopened. A British-drafted press statement agreed to by all 15 council members on Wednesday welcomed the current cease-fire, expressed "grave concern" at the humanitarian situation in Gaza, and encouraged "tangible steps" toward Palestinian reconciliation. The council emphasized the need to fully implement the legally binding resolution it adopted on Jan. 8 which calls for an immediate, durable and fully respected cease-fire.
