US helicopter gunships attacked suspected al-Qaida terrorists hiding in Somalia Tuesday, a Somali official said, a day after US Special Operations forces launched at least two air attacks against suspected al-Qaida members in this restive Horn of Africa country.
The attack helicopters were trying to kill Islamic extremists, said a defense ministry official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak.
The strikes took place Tuesday morning in Afmadow, a town 350 kilometers (220 miles) southwest of the capital Mogadishu.
Somali lawmaker Abdiqadir Daqane told The Associated Press that 27 civilians were killed in the attack. "A newly wed couple were included in the dead," he said.
