Sri Lanka: Suicide bomber blows up during search

A suicide bomber blew himself up, killing a soldier and wounding two civilians in Sri Lanka's volatile north, amid escalating violence between troops and separatist Tamil Tigers that killed more than 50 people in three days, the military said. The blast occurred Saturday in Jaffna town, the cultural heart of Sri Lanka's ethnic Tamil minority, said military spokesman Brig. Prasad Samarasinghe. Two bystanders were wounded in the explosion, Samarasinghe said. The attack came amid renewed fighting between Tamil Tigers and security forces on several fronts in the north and east, where the Tigers want to establish a separate homeland for the country's ethnic Tamil minority.
