The State Department is ordering all nonessential personnel and the families of all American diplomats to leave Madagascar due to the uncertain security situation after the ouster of the Indian Ocean island's president.
In a travel warning released late Tuesday, the department said it had taken the step because of unrest following the resignation of the president and hand-over to the military of his command. On Monday, the Peace Corps announced it had suspended its programs in Madagascar.
The State Department order makes compulsory a decision made last week to allow nonessential personnel and families to leave Madagascar voluntarily.
