US Report slams Pentagon nuclear oversight

A senior defense official said a Pentagon advisory group is criticizing the US Defense Department for lack of focus on its nuclear mission and calling for higher level oversight. In a report to be released Thursday, the task force will recommend the Pentagon create a new assistant secretary position to oversee its nuclear management. The report is the second part of a broad review that last September condemned the Air Force for a dramatic deterioration in managing the US nuclear arsenal. It is one of several studies triggered by a series of Air Force blunders in its handling of nuclear-related materials, missteps that prompted Defense Secretary Robert Gates to sack the top civilian and military leaders of the service last year.
