A 15-year-old student told authorities he had planned a massacre at a Michigan high school similar to the one at Virginia Tech, the Grand Traverse County sheriff said Friday.
Detectives found ammunition and 12 guns at the boy's home, but they were "typical hunting weapons" that apparently belonged to his parents, Sheriff Scott Fewins said. There was no indication the student had acquired firearms on his own, he said.
The youth attends Traverse City West Senior High School. He confided his intentions to a faculty member Thursday morning and described himself as suicidal, Fewins said.
"He indicated he has problems with some of the students; he feels they belittle him and they know how to push his buttons," he said.
A phone message seeking comment was left with Traverse City school Superintendent James Feil.
The youth was evaluated at Munson Medical Center, then sent to another hospital in southern Michigan, Fewins said. He declined to say which one but described it as "a secure setting."
